The AQF Level 5 management qualification for security professionals coordinating protective security functions, developing risk management plans, and ensuring PSPF compliance across Australian government. Built for senior security advisors, protective security coordinators, security managers, and APS6+ professionals progressing into management roles.
The PSP50316 Diploma of Government Security is a nationally recognised vocational qualification at Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 5, drawn from the Public Sector Training Package (PSP). It is governed by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and registered on training.gov.au. It supersedes and is equivalent to PSP51812 Diploma of Government (Security).
The qualification develops the competencies required for independent and self-directed work as a practitioner in government security management. Holders apply integrated technical and theoretical concepts to coordinate protective security, assess and manage security risks, develop and monitor security risk management plans, and ensure compliance with the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF). It is suitable for senior security advisors, protective security coordinators, government security managers, agency security advisors (ASAs), and security risk managers across federal departments, state agencies, and defence.
Successful completion of 11 units of competency is required (6 core + 5 elective). The qualification is awarded by Asset College (RTO #31718). Training and assessment are delivered under a third-party arrangement with Asset College RTO #31718. It builds directly on the PSP40316 Certificate IV in Government Security and provides a pathway to BSB60420 Advanced Diploma of Leadership and Management or further security management qualifications.
A Diploma sits at AQF Level 5 — between Cert IV (specialised) and Advanced Diploma (paraprofessional management). It signals capability for independent, self-directed work applying integrated technical and theoretical concepts in a broad range of contexts. Recognised across federal, state, and defence agencies as the management-level credential for protective security.
Demand continues to grow under the Protective Security Policy Framework (PSPF) — every Australian Government entity must designate an Agency Security Advisor. The Diploma is widely held or required for ASA appointments, defence security coordinator roles, and senior protective security positions in critical infrastructure.
