The BSB40320 Certificate IV in Entrepreneurship and New Business is a nationally recognised vocational qualification at Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) Level 4, drawn from the Business Services Training Package (BSB). It is governed by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) and registered on training.gov.au. The qualification reflects the role of individuals establishing or operating a business providing self-employment, as well as those establishing a new venture as part of a larger organisation. It supersedes BSB42615 Certificate IV in New Small Business, consolidating entrepreneurship credentials in the BSB Training Package into a single AQF Level 4 award.
The qualification is built around four mandatory entrepreneurship core units covering business plan development, legal and risk management for new ventures, financial planning, and marketing — the formal toolkit for moving an idea or existing operation from concept to a structured, plannable, scalable business. It is the next step up from BSB30220 Certificate III in Entrepreneurship and New Business — where Cert III asks "investigate and propose," Cert IV asks "research, plan, and operationalise" with quantitative business plans, cash flow projections, and operational strategies.
Successful completion of 10 units of competency is required (4 core + 6 elective). Of the 6 elective units, at least 2 must be from Group A — Entrepreneurship and New Business, with the remaining 4 selectable from Group A or Group B — Transferable Skills. Up to 2 units may be imported from any Cert III, Cert IV, or Diploma in any currently endorsed Training Package. The qualification is awarded by Asset College (RTO #31718). For those with prior knowledge, skills, or qualifications — complete two units per month for up to six months. This intensive option requires approximately 30–40 hours per week. Ideal if you want to fast-track your qualification.
