The Diploma of Operational Safety (Use of Force Instructor) is the named specialisation pathway for individuals who train others in the lawful, ethical, and tactical application of force. This nationally accredited qualification prepares learners to design, manage and deliver use of force training programs, and to instruct in self-defence techniques, defensive tactics, and the use of operational tools including batons, handcuffs and OC spray.
Building on the 6 shared core units (occupational violence management, BOSAR, crisis communication, operational security, tactical casualty care, and high-stress wellbeing), this stream focuses on the 6 specialist instructor electives from Group A. Graduates are equipped to lead use of force training departments, develop curricula, and ensure compliance with operational standards across high-risk industries.
This stream is ideal for ADF combatives instructors, police DOIT (Defensive and Officer Intervention Tactics) trainers, corrections IRT (Immediate Response Team) instructors, security industry trainers, and operational safety managers responsible for training delivery.
Upon successful completion you will be awarded the nationally accredited 11346NAT Diploma of Operational Safety (Use of Force Instructor) through Asset College (RTO 31718). This specialisation positions you for senior instructor and training management roles including Use of Force Instructor, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Operational Safety Trainer, Security Training Manager, and RTO Trainer & Assessor (Security). Average salaries for these roles range from $80,000 to $140,000 depending on sector and seniority. AFP sworn officers in instructor roles also receive a $3,500/yr Use of Force allowance.

A nationally accredited course (NAT) is a VET qualification developed to address specific industry skill gaps not covered by existing training packages. Unlike training package qualifications (prefixed BSB, CPP, PSP, etc.) which are developed by Jobs and Skills Councils, nationally accredited courses are developed by Registered Training Organisations or other bodies and submitted for accreditation by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA).
The 11346NAT Diploma of Operational Safety was accredited in May 2025 for a five-year period after extensive consultation with over 100 industry stakeholders. It carries the same national recognition as training package qualifications and is listed on the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) at Diploma level (Level 5). The qualification addresses critical training gaps in operational safety, use-of-force instruction, and threat management identified by the Australian Security Industry Association and the National VET Regulator.
