How to Improve Time Management?

Having the discipline to manage your own time effectively is a highly sought-after skill set in a lot of industries. Being able to balance work and leisure activities can afford you many opportunities, both personally and professionally.

Sometimes, priorities change – and with it, can come the need to adjust how much time you are spending between various commitments.

Here are some tips to help you improve your time management skills:

Tip 1: Goal setting

Write out your goals, and give yourself milestones along the way to support you in reaching your goals.

By planning your goals, and the pathway to achieving them, you can sort out what activities or potential distractions are getting in the way of you achieving your goals.

By writing goals down you can prioritise them, which means you are able to use your time effectively to achieve them within the timeframes required.

Tip 2: Prioritise Tasks

Too many things to do, and too little time? Organise and prioritise them! It’s so easy to get overwhelmed or distracted by urgent and important tasks, but really, they can be simplified by taking a moment to organise and prioritise them. The important tasks go at the top of the list, and the not-so-urgent ones can go towards the bottom.

Not sure how to organise and prioritise tasks? Here are some suggested categories to assist you:

  • Urgent – must be done immediately
  • Important – need to be done, but not immediately
  • Urgent, but not important – may give you instant satisfaction when completed, but do little else (Perhaps you can enlist help on them?)
  • Neither urgent nor important – very low priority tasks

One of the advantages of prioritising tasks is the sense of accomplishment you can feel when you are able to cross one off the list.

Tip 3: You Can Say No

Invitations to social events, family gatherings, holidays or any other occasion that are a lot of fun to participate in, but you aren’t entirely sure how you can fit it into your schedule; simply say no.

It’s hard. Particularly when it is family or loved ones, but ultimately it is necessary sometimes in order to get the task at hand done. As long as you stick to your schedule, and follow a to-do-list to track each task and its priority, it becomes easier to turn people down when you have a full picture and plan to achieve a goal.

But remember to be kind to yourself along the way, and give yourself milestone achievements, and celebrate successes.

Tip 4: Keep an Eye on The Time

It’s common for many people to undertake tasks that require complete attention. It’s very easy to lose track of the time, and then playing catch up to complete a variety of other tasks.

Schedules can often become hectic, but no matter how busy you get, you should always keep track of the time. By keeping track of time, you can better commit to your schedule.

If you are working out of home, in the office, studying or even enjoying leisure activities; being aware of the time is critical to maximising every moment you spend on a task to maximise productivity and efficiency.

By implementing these four tips, you will be able to improve your time management skills.
