Defence Qualifications — Recognise Your ADF Service

Every year you've spent in the Australian Defence Force — leading teams, managing operations, running logistics, handling security — already maps to nationally recognised qualifications. Through Recognition of Prior Learning, 3CIR converts your service into formal defence qualifications across more than 40 courses, at 25% off, with no classroom and no exams.

Defence qualifications are nationally recognised credentials that members of the Australian Defence Force can obtain through Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), an assessment process governed by the Australian Qualifications Framework. Rather than studying, serving and former ADF personnel are assessed against their existing service evidence and can hold a nationally recognised qualification in as little as seven days.

40+ Defence Courses Across 9 Categories

From Certificate II to Graduate Diploma, your ADF service maps to nationally recognised qualifications in leadership, security, government, business and beyond — all delivered through RPL.

Most ADF members are surprised by how many defence courses they already qualify for. The same skills that make you effective in uniform — leading people, managing risk, coordinating logistics, maintaining security and getting the job done under pressure — are the exact competencies civilian qualifications are built around. That's why defence quals earned through RPL aren't a shortcut; they're an accurate, evidence-based recognition of work you've genuinely done. Every category below maps to nationally recognised qualifications you can hold without setting foot in a classroom or sitting a single exam.

Nationally recognised defence qualifications are formal credentials issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) that recognise the skills and knowledge Australian Defence Force members gain through service. Because military roles develop competencies in leadership, management, security, logistics and safety that mirror civilian qualifications, ADF experience can be formally assessed against accredited training packages listed on training.gov.au.

The assessment process is called Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL). Rather than completing a course, a member submits evidence of their service — records, performance appraisals, course reports and position descriptions — which is assessed by qualified assessors against the units of competency in a qualification. Training and assessment are delivered under a third-party arrangement with Asset College RTO #31718, a Registered Training Organisation regulated by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA). Qualifications issued this way carry exactly the same national recognition as those earned through classroom study.

DEFENCE QUALIFICATIONS — ANSWERED

Your Questions, Answered

Everything serving members and veterans ask about getting their defence qualifications recognised.

Defence qualifications are nationally recognised credentials that recognise the skills Australian Defence Force members develop through service. Because military roles build competencies in leadership, security, logistics and management, that experience can be formally assessed against accredited qualifications under the Australian Qualifications Framework — without returning to study.

Yes. Defence nationally recognised qualifications are issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework and delivered under a third-party arrangement with Asset College RTO #31718. They carry exactly the same recognition as qualifications earned through classroom study and are accepted by employers, government and other training organisations across Australia.

Defence force RPL is Recognition of Prior Learning for ADF members — a formal assessment that converts your service into a qualification instead of requiring a course. You submit evidence from your service record and qualified assessors map it to units of competency. For our full rank-based process, see our Military RPL page.

More than 40 defence courses are available across nine categories: leadership and management, security and risk, government security, business, work health and safety, project management, HR and quality auditing, marketing, and corrections. Qualifications range from Certificate II through to Graduate Diploma, depending on your service and seniority.

RPL is the fastest route to a defence qualification — many members are certified in as little as seven days once their evidence is submitted. Timeframes depend on how quickly you gather your service documents and the qualification you're targeting, but RPL is dramatically faster than studying a course from scratch.

With the 25% military and emergency services discount applied, pricing runs from $371.25 for Certificate II, $637.50 for Certificate III and $862.50 for Certificate IV, up to $1,125 for a Diploma, $1,612.50 for an Advanced Diploma and $2,463.75 for a Graduate Diploma. All prices are GST-free, with payment plans available.

Yes — that's exactly what RPL does. Defence qualifications for civilians translate the leadership, security and operational skills you built in uniform into credentials recognised by civilian employers. Serving members, veterans, reservists and defence-industry professionals can all be assessed on the experience they already hold.

Useful evidence includes your ADF service record, PMKeys printouts, course reports and records of attainment, performance appraisals (PARs, SPARs or PPRs), position descriptions, your corps or trade competency record, and your resume. We tell you exactly what's needed during your free assessment, so you're never guessing.

Yes. A qualification gained through RPL is identical to one earned by studying — there's no notation on the certificate distinguishing the two. Because it's issued under the Australian Qualifications Framework through a registered training organisation, employers across the public and private sector recognise it the same way.

Start with a free, no-obligation RPL assessment. As a veteran-owned provider, we make the defence qualifications website experience simple: tell us your service background and target qualification, and we'll confirm your eligibility and map out your fastest path. Begin your free assessment here.
