WHO IT'S FOR

Built for Every Stage of Your ADF Transition

Whether your discharge date is years away or already behind you, Recognition of Prior Learning turns the experience you earned in uniform into qualifications civilian employers immediately recognise. Here's where you fit.

🎯

Still Serving & Planning Ahead

If you're still in and a separation date is on the horizon, this is the smartest time to start. Securing nationally recognised qualifications before you transition means you step into the civilian job market already credentialled — not scrambling for paperwork while job-hunting. Most members begin their RPL 6–12 months out so their CV is ready the day they discharge.

🪖

Recently Separated & In Transition

If you've left the ADF in the last few months or years, RPL closes the gap between what you can do and what your resume can prove. Civilian recruiters, HR systems and government panels screen on formal qualifications. Converting your service into Certificate IV, Diploma or Advanced Diploma credentials lets you compete on equal footing and command civilian-market salaries.

Veterans & Reservists

Long-separated veterans and serving reservists hold years of leadership, project, security and safety experience that has never been formally recognised. RPL captures it now. Whether you're advancing in a civilian career, moving into government or defence-industry roles, or returning to study, a recognised qualification gives your service the credential it has always deserved.

QUALIFICATION PATHWAYS

Turn Your Service Into a Nationally Recognised Qualification

From Certificate III to Advanced Diploma, 3CIR maps your ADF experience to civilian credentials across nine career areas — with project management and security management the two most popular transition pathways.

What is ADF transition RPL?

ADF transition RPL is the use of Recognition of Prior Learning during a Defence member's move from military service to civilian employment. Recognition of Prior Learning is a nationally regulated assessment process — governed by the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) and overseen by the Australian Skills Quality Authority (ASQA) — that measures your existing skills, knowledge and experience against the requirements of a formal qualification listed on training.gov.au. For Australian Defence Force personnel, service achievements such as leadership appointments, project and operational roles, security and risk responsibilities, and workplace safety duties can be mapped directly to civilian credentials from Certificate III to Advanced Diploma. At 3CIR, training and assessment are delivered under a third-party arrangement with Asset College RTO #31718. The result is a recognised qualification that translates ADF experience into language civilian employers, recruiters and HR systems understand — without repeating learning already demonstrated in uniform.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

ADF Transition & RPL, Answered

Everything ADF members ask about transitioning, RPL, qualifications, pricing and the process.

What is ADF transition?

ADF transition is the process of moving from Australian Defence Force service into civilian life and employment. It covers everything from administrative separation and entitlements to finding civilian work. A key part of a successful transition is converting your military experience into nationally recognised qualifications through Recognition of Prior Learning, so civilian employers can clearly see what you're capable of.

When should I start planning my ADF transition?

The earlier the better. Most members benefit from starting 6–12 months before their discharge date. Beginning your RPL early means you can step into the job market already qualified, rather than chasing paperwork while applying for roles. That said, RPL works just as well after you've separated — there's no time limit on recognising the experience you earned.

What is ADF RPL and how does it work?

ADF RPL (Recognition of Prior Learning) is a formal assessment that converts your Defence service into civilian qualifications without further study. Our veteran assessors map your service records, training and competencies against nationally recognised qualification requirements. If your evidence meets the criteria, your qualification is issued through Asset College (RTO 31718) — often within 2–6 weeks.

Can I do project management RPL as a defence member?

Yes. Project management RPL for defence personnel is one of our most popular pathways. Operational planning, capability projects, logistics coordination and deployment management all map to project management units. You can RPL the Certificate IV in Project Management Practice, the Diploma of Project Management, or the Advanced Diploma of Program Management. Explore project management RPL here.

Is there RPL in security management for military personnel?

Absolutely. RPL in security management for military personnel converts force protection, physical security, threat assessment and risk responsibilities into recognised credentials — including the Certificate IV in Security and Risk Management and the Diploma of Security Risk Management. These are valued across government, defence industry and corporate security. Explore security management RPL here.

How does RPL fit with the ADF Transition Seminar?

The official ADF Transition Seminar explains your entitlements, support services and the administrative side of separating. RPL is the practical career step that complements it — turning your service into a qualification you can list on your civilian resume. Many members start their free RPL assessment around the time of their seminar so they leave with a concrete career plan, not just paperwork.

How long does it take to get qualified through RPL?

Most ADF members complete the process within 2–6 weeks. With well-organised evidence, some members have received their qualification in as little as 7 days. The timeline depends on the qualification level, the quality of your evidence, and whether any small gap training is needed. We're one of the fastest RPL providers in Australia for defence personnel.

How much do the qualifications cost?

With the 25% Defence discount applied: Certificate III from $637.50, Certificate IV from $862.50, Diploma from $1,125, and Advanced Diploma from $1,612.50. All prices are GST-free and all-inclusive. Flexible payment plans are available through Afterpay, Klarna, Zip, GoCardless and DebitSuccess — so you can pay nothing upfront and spread the cost.

What evidence do I need from my ADF service?

Useful evidence includes your ADO Service Record, PMKeys printouts, course reports and ROAs, PARs/SPARs/PPRs, position descriptions, your Corps MAE, any formal qualifications and a current resume. Don't have everything? Our veteran assessors work with what you have and guide you through any gaps. Most members are surprised by how much evidence they already hold.

How do I get started?

Start with a free, no-obligation RPL assessment. Tell us your service background and the qualification you're interested in, and we'll confirm your eligibility and map out your pathway. There's no cost and no commitment. Begin your free assessment here and take the first step in your transition.
